What to do in Case of a Dental Emergency
Injuries to Teeth
Taking care of a chipped or cracked tooth can vary in urgency. Mostly, rinsing with a saltwater solution and applying gauze to any bleeding area will be effective until you reach the office. Do not apply a topical pain reliever as it can burn. If possible, save any of the broken pieces of tooth. Should the pain, swelling or bleeding persist before an appointment can be made, consider a visit to the emergency room.
If one of your teeth is completely dislodged, there are some measures you can take to preserve the tooth or ensure a better outcome. After gently rinsing the tooth, carefully try to fit it back into the socket. If this isn’t possible place the tooth in a glass of milk or some lightly salted water, and call us immediately. During regular business hours, come right to our office as there is only a small window of time that any attempt to replant a dislodged tooth can be made.
Severe Tooth Pain
Rinsing with salt water, using a topical pain reliever, and applying a cold compress to the outer cheek if swelling occurs can provide temporary relief. Most likely, one of your teeth has deep decay that has reached the nerve center. Sometimes, an abscess forms near a tooth root.
Abscesses are serious and need to be treated by right away. Rinse with a saltwater solution, and call our office immediately.
Broken Crowns, Bridges, or Dentures
Crowns and bridges can also become broken or dislodged. There is no need to panic, but it is important to make a prompt appointment. Delaying the replacement or repair of any restoration may require Dr. Zollinger to obtain a new impression of your teeth and gums.
Broken dentures can sometimes be repaired at our lab. If you lose your dentures, the team at Dental Care of Spokane works hard to make sure you are not without teeth for long. We can fit you for a temporary denture and expedite your replacement. Dr. Zollinger can even upgrade your appliance with dental implants, so you never have to worry about losing your dentures again.
